Howard Hoffman zitiert aus der Korrespondenz von Rudolf Bultmann, des grossen Theologen, an Karl Jaspers, des grossen existenzialistischen Philosophen:
He is as convinced as I am that a corpse cannot come back to life or rise from the grave. … But how am I, in my capacity as pastor, to explain, in my sermons and classes, texts dealing with the Ressurrection of Jesus in the flesh…? And how am I, in my capacity as theological scholar, to guide the pastor in his task by my interpretations?”
Hofmann nimmt den Faden auf und zieht die nötige Schlussfolgerung:
How indeed? If one accepts the metaphysical assumptions of naturalism and accordingly demythologizes Christianity, there is nothing left but one’s ethical and moral preferences based only on fallible human opinion.
