Sühneopfer – “ich liebe den Gedanken nicht”

Roger Nicole berichtet, wie er für das Doktoralexamen an der Harvard beim berühmten Theologen Paul Tillich antraben sollte. Doch dieser war abwesend und liess sich vertreten. Nicole bedauerte dies. Als er seinen Professor das nächste Mal sah, erinnerte er diesen:

“You should have been there at my examination.” He said, “What were you examined on?” I said, “On the atonement.” He said, “Oh, I dislike the thought anyway!” So I thought it was very nice thing not to have Tillich as my examiner.

Später meint Nicole im Blick auf seinen Standpunkt der begrenzten Sühne:

In my opinion, the strongest point of Calvinism is that Jesus Christ died to redeem his people. The ultimate issue is the Marriage Feast of the Lamb, and that is the whole purose of creation as I see it: from beginning to end there is one purpose for God, and in spite of the derelicition from the ideal path he has traced for us, he still carries out his purpose.
