Gresham Machen kämpfte gegen die Idee der liberalen Theologie, das Christentum von der Geschichte abzukoppeln:
Christianity is a historical phenomenon, like the Roman Empire, or the Kingdom of Prussia, or the United States of America. And as a historical phenomenon it must be investigated on the basis of historical evidence.
Die Verbindung zwischen Geschichte und Botschaft wird an Leben, Tod und Auferstehung Jesu besonders deutlich:
“Christ died”–that is history; “Christ died for our sins”–that is doctrine. Without these two elements, joined in an absolutely indissoluble union, there is no Christianity.
